    The mission of The Paso del Norte Health Foundation is to lead, leverage and invest in initiatives, programs and policies that promote health and prevent disease in the Paso del Norte region. The vision of the Health Foundation is to improve quality of life in the region through healthy living. The Paso del Norte Health Foundation promotes health and prevents disease in the region through leadership in health education, research and advocacy. The Paso del Norte Health Foundation has the following priority areas:
    • Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL)
    • Tobacco Control and Alcohol Prevention
    • Mental and Emotional Well-being
    • Healthy Kids
    • Health Leadership
     

    History of Funding

    Additional Information

    Current Programs and initiatives made available through The Paso del Norte Health Foundation include: 
    • A Smoke Free Paso del Norte: The goal of A Smoke Free Paso del Norte is to eliminate tobacco smoking in the region. The initiative's coordinated and comprehensive approach includes preventing the initiation of smoking among youth, promoting quitting among adults and young people, eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke, and eliminating tobacco-related disparities among population groups. 
    • Healthy Eating and Active Living: The goals of the Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) initiative are to 1) increase fruit & vegetable consumption and improve portion control; 2) increase physical activity and decrease sedentary behavior; 3) create an environment that promotes healthy eating and active living without bias against obesity; and 4) achieve long-term sustainability of Paso del Norte Institute for Healthy Living (IHL) and HEAL initiative.
    • IGNITE: The goal of the IGNITE Initiative is to improve a range of health outcomes by engaging disconnected youth in the Paso del Norte region in high quality programs during out of school hours.
    • REALIZE: The goal of the REALIZE experience is to inspire already effective leaders to become transformational leaders for the benefit of the region's health. Customized for the Paso del Norte region and built on nine leadership attributes, REALIZE offers a cohort of twenty executives, the opportunity for individualized leadership growth over fifteen months.
    • SHIFT+: The goals the Shift+ initiative are to reduce underage drinking and binge drinking in all ages.
    • Think.Change: The major goal of the Think.Change initiative is to reduce stigma associated with mental illness.
    • Two Should Know: The overarching goal of the initiative is to effect long-term improvements in sexual health across the life-span and reduce negative health outcomes in the Paso del Norte region. 
    • El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium: The El Paso Behavioral Health Consortium (Consortium) convened to examine the El Paso community behavioral health system in preparation for future service needs and funding trends. Its actions are informed by community leaders and available data including an El Paso County behavioral health system assessment conducted in 2014. 
    • El Paso Psychology Internship Consortium (EPPIC): The U.S.-Mexico border region is dramatically underserved in the area of mental health, especially by doctoral-level care providers. A team of psychologists from UTEP and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center developed a doctoral internship that will help meet the need for mental health providers. 
    • Healthy Paso del Norte Report: The 2016 Healthy Paso del Norte report is a special community leadership project developed by the Coalition for a Healthy Paso del Norte to advance a health agenda for the Paso del Norte region. 
    • Paso del Norte Health Information Exchange: The Paso del Norte Health Information Exchange (HIE) is a non-profit organization created with the purpose of improving the quality of health care in the community they serve. Members of the HIE plan to work together as a collaborative of major and community health care providers through the secure sharing of privacy-protected health information about patients and the sharing of best practices for the improvement of care. 
    The Paso del Norte Health Foundation provides support to both potential and current grantees.   • Eligibility Details

    Giving is limited to El Paso and Hudspeth Counties in far west Texas, Doña Ana, Luna, and Otero Counties in southern New Mexico, and the municipality of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. No grants to individuals.

    Deadline Details

    Proposal deadlines are clearly stated on all RFPs. On average, the time frame is 60-90 days from when the grant opportunity is announced. Applicants should refer to the program page for details on competitive grant opportunities.

    Award Details

    Award amounts vary. Awards will last for 12 to 24 months. A maximum amount of 10% of direct costs is allowed for indirect costs.
