    Summary

    The Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne offers many different grant programs whose goal it is to bring about positive change and impact while making the community the best place to live, work, and play. The following grant programs provide support to projects and organizations that enhance the lives of residents within Allen County and Northeast Indiana. With the help of donors, nonprofits and volunteers, the Community Foundation is committed to making lives better in every corner of our community. Community Foundation grants are as varied as the community. Some are awarded through an open, competitive grant application process, while others reflect an advised fund donor's recommendation or are part of an estate gift. However, they all have a single goal: improving the community. 


    • Rising Together Grants: These signature grants align with each pillar in the foundation's Let's Rise!” Vision Plan and are funded through the Paul Clarke Endowment and the Community Impact Fund. The grant cycle includes five windows; each window is aligned with a pillar as detailed below:
      • Connected Community: We affect change in our community by being an advocate for the underserved, instilling pride, and building relationships to create a sense of belonging. Examples of groups that fit within this category are the arts, transportation, animal rights, and groups supporting people with health conditions or impairments.
      • Everyone's Economy: We help create an economy where every citizen has the opportunity for upward mobility and increased security and is motivated to achieve their goals. Examples of groups that fit within this category are workforce development, housing, and basic needs.
      • Lifelong Learning: We work to Build a culture of lifelong learning that helps people flourish, strengthening our workforce and increasing resiliency. Examples of groups that fit within this category are education, after-school programs, and adult learning.
      • Inspiring Places: We provide resources and support to create a community filled with spaces that engage, connect and energize residents and visitors. Examples of groups that fit within this category are arts, environment, and community development.
      • Healthy Mind & Body: We help each person in our community feel mentally and physically healthy, with access to tools and resources to reach their highest potential. Examples of groups that might fit within this category are healthcare, mental health, food and fitness, and basic needs.
    • Agile Grants: These project-oriented and interest area-specific grants are available from funds established by donors to support specific interest areas. These grants are available year-round.
    • Engage Grants: These grants offer funding to first-time grantees and organizations or first-time projects that positively impact the community's well-being. These grants are available year-round.
    • Emergency Grants: These rapid-response grants are available year-round and offer financial resources to grantees facing an emergency due to a sudden, unexpected occurrence which demands immediate attention.
    • Foundation-Guided Grants: The Community Foundation manages grant applications for multiple Foundations and Funds. Each Foundation and Fund has specific application requirements and a distinct area of focus. Refer to the foundation website for more information.
    • Youth Empowered Philanthropy (YEP): YEP empowers youth to make real decisions with real money that creates real impact in Allen County. YEP strives to make the community a more vibrant place to live, work, and play while inspiring philanthropy as a habit for future generations. In addition to applying for grant dollars, nonprofits can also apply for volunteer time from YEP students.
     

    History of Funding

    To date, the foundation has distributed $184 million in grants to nonprofits.

    Additional Information

    Funding Guidelines:

    • Location: The organization applying must primarily serve the Allen County Area. While preference will be given to local applicants, organizations do not have to be based in Allen County.
    • Diversity and Inclusion: The foundation seeks grantees and partners that incorporate diversity and inclusion into their mission, governance board, staff, volunteers, and constituents served. To receive a grant from the Community Foundation's unrestricted endowments, your organization must affirm that no person is excluded from services or employment due to discriminatory reasons, including race, color, ancestry, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability, familial status, sexual orientation, gender, or gender identity.
    • Collaboration: The foundation welcomes collaboration and partnership applications. Partners should select one nonprofit as the lead applicant for collaborations between two or more nonprofits. Any awarded funds are to be used for the sole purpose of the partnership's work, and the lead applicant will be responsible for managing the funds on behalf of the partners.
    • Approaches: The foundation welcomes a variety of methods in tackling community issues, including direct services, advocacy, community organizing, partnerships, and others as they relate to your mission.
    • Restrictions: As required by IRS rules, grant funds may not be used: a) to carry on lobbying activities as defined under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; b) for partisan political activities that are prohibited under Section 501(c)(3); c)to make a grant to any individual for travel, study or other similar purposes or to make a sub-grant to any other organization unless the grant complies with Section 4945(d)(3) or (4) of the Internal Revenue Code and the grant is part of the approved purpose; or d) to undertake any activity for any purpose other than the charitable and educational purposes specified in Section 170(c)(2)(B) of the Internal Revenue Code.
