Summary
The primary goal of the Arts in Education grants is to strengthen arts education in pre-school and K-12 public schools statewide. Arts in Education offers several grant programs that support professional development for arts educators and build the capacity of arts education initiatives.
The following grants that are supported by Arts Education include:
- Creative Start Regional- This program seeks to close the opportunity gap by supporting and expanding regional and multi-regional arts integration efforts in service of early learning communities (preschool through third grade).
- Regional efforts provide professional learning and implementation support for educators and community members at a minimum of three school sites that serve students in preschool through third grade. All school sites associated with the project must be in one ArtsWA defined region.
- Multi-Regional efforts provide professional learning and implementation support to multiple school districts, Educational Service Districts, or Tribal communities in at least two ArtsWA defined regions.
- Creative Start Site- This program supports culturally responsive professional learning and site-based workshops for schools and communities. Applicants must have a site team that includes a minimum of; (1) lead educator/teacher, (1) community member, and (1) school principal or early learning director that show readiness to implement and support this work.
- First Step - This grant supports new arts education partnerships between schools and community organizations the strengthen K-12 arts education experiences. This grant also supports professional development for arts education providers and/or capacity-building arts education initiatives.
- Community Consortium Grants- This grant supports well-established partnerships between schools, arts organizations, and community partners.Community Consortium grants can support professional development for arts educators. They can also help fund initiatives and strategies to build your program.

Additional Information
Creative Start Regional Grant applications must have a lead partner and a minimum of two additional partners (i.e. Early learning educators and teaching artists)
Creative Start Site Grant applications must have a site team that includes a minimum of; (1) lead educator/teacher, (1) community member, and (1) school principal or early learning director that show readiness to implement and support this work.
First Step Grant applications must include a primary partnership that includes a minimum of; (1) school/district, (1) professional arts education provider, and the local PTA or parent representation.
Community Consortium funds will not support any of the following:
- Arts education for K-12 students that occurs outside of school hours or is considered to be an extra-curricular program. (Consortium programs may offer out-of-school time options as part of their overall program, but those programs may not be supported by ArtsWA funds.)
- Programs for which selected students are pulled out of regular classes, or programs for which students self-select.
- One-time exposure” programs, or short-term projects with limited student engagement.
NOTE: All programs prohibit funding of parochial schools or other organizations with a religious affiliation or purpose.
Eligibility Details
Eligible applicants for Creative Start Regional Grant includes any Washington State Educational Service District (ESD), school district, or tribal government, within a single ArtsWA defined region. (NOTE: Multi-regional Creative Start grants require two ArtsWA regions)
Eligible applicants for the Creative Site, First Step, and Community Consortium Grant include any Washington State public school/school district, tribal school or early learning non-profit organization with 501(c)(3).
Deadline Details
The deadline to submit the Creative Start Regional Grant is September 18, 2020. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.
The deadline to submit the Creative Start Site Grant and First Step Grant was on April 3, 2020. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.
The deadline to submit the Community Consortium Grant was on March 20, 2019. A similar deadline is expected in March 2021. Grants operate on a two-year cycle.
Award Details
The maximum grant award for the Creative Start Regional Grant is $35,000; grant amounts range from $10,000- $35,000.
- Regional Creative Start projects are eligible for up to $25,000
- Multi-Regional Creative Start Projects are eligible for up to $35,000.
The maximum award amount for the Creative Start Site grant is $8,000.
The maximum amount for the First Step grant is $5,000; grant amounts will generally range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the scope of the proposed program and its projected impact. Cost sharing/matching of at least a 1:1 ratio is required.
Community Consortium grants will range from $5,000 to $18,000. Consortium grants are 2-year grants: approved applications will be funded for 2 consecutive fiscal years, pending available state and federal funds. Cost sharing/matching of at least a 1:1 ratio is required.
