    Since 1968, the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region has worked to improve the quality of life in the region by promoting and facilitating effective philanthropy. The foundation's success is directly related to its generous donors who invest through the Community Foundation in the area's most effective nonprofit organizations.


    The Community Foundation provides:

    • High-impact, flexible giving opportunities for donors
    • Major funding for nonprofits and scholarships for students
    • Leadership around key community issues
     

    History of Funding

    In 2022, the Community Foundation distributed more than $7.4 million in grants to nearly 1,460 nonprofit organizations and programs, and in scholarship awards to local students.

    • Programs that the Community Foundation will have to operate;
    • Individuals;
    • Scholarship or fellowship programs;
    • Research;
    • Endowments;
    • Political, governmental or religious activities;
    • Travel;
    • Conferences and/or speakers' expenses;
    • Advertisements in programs, journals or other publications;
    • Special events and other fundraising events;
    • Annual appeals or membership contributions.

  • Eligibility Details

    To be eligible for competitive grants, applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • Qualify under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code as a nonprofit organization OR operate under the fiscal sponsorship of an organization that does;
    • Serve residents and be located within the ten-county greater Capital Region (Albany, Columbia, Fulton, Greene, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, and Washington Counties) unless otherwise noted.
