The Annie E. Casey Foundation is committed to building a brighter future for children who face significant obstacles on the road to adulthood. To help kids, we must invest in the parents who raise them and the neighborhoods where they live. The foundation's work focuses on ensuring kids have strong, supportive families; increasing economic opportunity; transforming struggling communities; and strengthening social sector leaders dedicated to improving the lives of young people. To those ends, the foundation invests in innovative ideas, practices and policies that have the potential to help millions thrive. The foundation's grant making is therefore very selective.
In support of the foundation's vision to build a brighter future for millions of children, they focus their efforts in areas that address the needs of children and young people facing the greatest challenges.
Central to the Foundation's work is a focus on knowing what works and using data to drive decision making. The foundation funds a wide range of activities in that vein:
In 2022, the foundation awarded 963 grants to 692 organizations. In 2022, the average grant from the Casey Foundation was $85,262. In total, the foundation awarded $94 million to projects and activities that support children, youth, families and communities in 2022. Programs are only one part of the solution. That's why the foundation also invests in the effectiveness of nonprofit and government leaders, organizations and networks, building their capacity to achieve results for children and families. In particular, the foundation funds strategies that support the following:
The Casey Foundation only funds organizations in the United States, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The majority of funding goes to tax-exempt organizations (nonprofits, public charities and universities) and public agencies in the United States identified by staff members. The Foundation is unable to make grants or donations directly to individuals and specifically do not fund projects outside the United States, lobbying and political campaigning.
The Foundation does not accept or review unsolicited proposals. For the vast majority of grants, foundation staff will approach an organization directly and invite them to submit a proposal. Infrequently, the foundation may solicit applications for a targeted project through an open call for proposals.
