    Summary

    The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation will award up to $1.3 million through a competitive Environmental Education and Stewardship grants program per year. The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation award grants in four focus areas:

    • Human needs grants that support increased food security, housing and shelter, and access to basic medical and health care.
    • Environmental stewardship grants to protect natural resources and help non-profit organizations make efficient use of energy.
    • Education grants to develop the capacity of the future workforce, especially in STEM and energy fields.
    • Community vitality grants to foster an appreciation of diversity, revitalize neighborhoods and ensure a vibrant community life through support of cultural endeavors.

    Successful grant proposals should:

    • Focuses on specific, short term project(s) that promise measurable results to improve the environment and/or provide meaningful educational opportunities
    • Represents innovative and promising ideas to meet stated objectives
    • Demonstrates careful planning and strong likelihood of success, including plans to sustain the project
    • Includes plans to evaluate and share results on effectiveness of the program

    Priority will be given to projects that support one or more of the following:

    • Educating K-12 students and the public about environmental stewardship
    • Protecting and preserving natural habitats
    • Improving open spaces and making nature accessible
     

    History of Funding

    In 2022, $45 million was invested in the communities Dominion Energy serves.

    Additional Information

    Dominion will consider full funding of amounts requested in each proposal, but reserves the right to fund some proposals partially. Budget items may include but are not limited to:

    • Instructional materials and supplies
    • Admission fees
    • Transportation costs for student activities
    • Teacher staff development specifically related to the project
    • Substitute teachers required for student or staff development activities
    • Equipment specifically related to the proposed project

    Foundation grant support will not cover:

    • Tangible benefits, including utility payments to Dominion Energy or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates
    • Individuals
    • Religious programs of churches or other sectarian organizations
    • Fraternal, political, advocacy or labor organizations
    • Projects or organizations that are not located within geographic areas where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests
    • Fund-raising events (dinners, lunches, etc.)
    • Golf tournaments or other sporting events
    • Organizations without 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
    • Organizations that limit membership and services based on race, religion, color, creed, sex, age or national origin
    • Advertising for benefit or courtesy purposes
    • Travel-related events, including student trips or tours
    • Memorial campaigns

    Dominion Energy does not typically fund university research projects or endow chairs. The primary interest of the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation is to support programs and specific projects. Consequently, support of capital campaigns is limited and provided on an exceptional basis.

    Deadline Details

    The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation will accept grant requests online during two grant cycles each year. Similar deadlines are anticipated annually.

    • Spring: Grant cycle opens February 20, 2024 and applications are due March 29, 2024.
    • Fall: Grant cycle opens August 1, 2024 and applications are due September 12, 2024.

    Award Details

    Most grant awards range from $1,000 to $15,000, while higher amounts may be awarded when a program is an exceptional fit.
