    Summary

    The Hampton Roads Community Foundation wants your organization to succeed whether you focus on arts, education, environment, healthcare, human services or other areas that help make Hampton Roads great. The Foundation offers the opportunity for your organization to apply for competitive Community Grants and Special Interest Grants.


    The Foundation has four principles that guide their grantmaking:

    1. Impact: Contribution to a long-term positive effect on a community issue
    2. Racial equity: Just, impartial, and fair access to services and programs by people of color
    3. Collaboration and partnership: Cooperative work among nonprofit organizations, connecting dots,” and finding synergies in complementary initiatives in order to co-produce solutions
    4. Innovation and Creativity: Utilization of new methods or approaches to solve community issues

    Community Grants focus on 6 areas:

    • Cultural vitality
    • Economic stability
    • Educational success
    • Environmental stewardship
    • Health and wellness
    • Vibrant places

    Special Interest Grants focus on nine areas of interest to donors:

    • Abuse Survivors: Sue Cook Winfrey Fund
    • Animal Welfare: Barbara Upton Wilson Fund
    • Developmental Disabilities: Laura Turner Fund and the Jennifer Lynn Gray Fund
    • Friends of Norfolk Public Schools
    • Horticultural Education: Julian Haden Gary and Margaret Gary Savage Fund
    • Mental Health Research: Benjamin R. Brown and Charles F. Brown Funds
    • The Nightingale Fund
    • Peninsula Activities: Harry F. Wall Memorial Fund and Mary E. & Curtis M. Chappell Jr. Fund
    • Pianos: E.K.Sloane Piano Fund

    Additional Information

    Grants are generally not available for: 

    • Organizations NOT tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code
    • Individuals
    • Fundraising events, annual fundraising appeals or agency celebrations
    • Ongoing operating support
    • Capital projects and facilities and equipment upgrades that can be considered routine maintenance or replacements.
    • Houses of worship unless applying for the Nightingale Fund for Faith Community Nursing or the E.K. Sloane Fund for pianos
    • Organizations and activities that require religious participation by those receiving services
    • Political or fraternal organizations
    • Endowment building
    • Existing obligations, debts/liabilities or costs that an agency has already incurred
    • Scholarly research
    • Scholarships, camper fees, fellowships or travel
    • Passenger vans for transporting youth
    • National or international organizations or purposes
    • Hospitals and similar health-care facilities unless applying for a Special Interest Grant
    • Projects or services normally considered the responsibility of government
    • Private primary or secondary schools, daycare facilities or academies other than those whose primary purpose is for students with special needs.
    • Capital campaign requests exceeding 5% of a campaign valued at $1 million or more

    The foundation notes that it is to your organization's advantage to discuss your proposal with a program officer before submitting it. You can make an appointment or just visit the foundation on their monthly Drop-in Day, usually the first Thursday of each month from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. You also are encouraged attend one of the foundation's free training sessions focused on various aspects of applying for a grant.

  • Eligibility Details

    Nonprofits that are tax exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the federal Internal Revenue Service code are eligible to apply for grant funding. Applicants should have a focus on helping improve life in southeastern Virginia. The foundation concentrates their competitive grantmaking in southeastern Virginia, primarily in the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach as well as Franklin, Isle of Wight County and Accomack and Northampton counties on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
