    Summary

Since 1978, the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has been the premier charitable partner trusted by thousands of generous Northern Virginians. The Community Foundation serves the region, including Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties and the Cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas and Manassas Park.

Funds are distributed through the following programs:

    1. Community Investment Funds - The Community Investment Funds are the signature grant cycle managed by the Community Foundation in which funds are invested in organizations serving the Northern Virginia community in the areas of child and youth development, education, health, mental health and aging, military personnel and their families, and poverty relief.
    2. Environment Fund - The mission of the Environment Fund is to protect, restore and improve the natural environment of Northern Virginia, thereby enhancing the health and quality of life of its citizens and the economy of the region.
    3. Healthy Kids Fund - Healthy Kids Grants are made each year to individual public schools in Northern Virginia that implement a program or strategy to encourage better nutrition or more activity among their student body during the school year.
    4. Innovation Fund - The Innovation Fund uses a venture philanthropy model of grant making in which donors to the Innovation Fund, in partnership with the Community Foundation board and staff, find investment opportunities in Northern Virginia that help:
      1. Diversify the local economy
      2. Launch the very first cyber security course of study in our local high schools
      3. Level the playing field for disadvantaged youth
      4. Promote grass roots innovation
    5. Micron Opportunity Fund - The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia has partnered with Micron Technology, Inc., to strengthen STEM learning through efforts to build knowledge, systems, and capacity in Northern Virginia by ensuring underserved students have access to high-quality STEM learning experiences.
    6. Our Children Fund - The Our Children Fund was created to provide financial assistance for "normalizing" items and experiences to children in the Fairfax County foster care system between the ages of birth and 17 years and young adults between the ages of 18 and 21 if permanency (return home, relative placement, or adoption) is not achieved and addresses their otherwise unmet medical, social, emotional, and education needs.
    7. Ross Roberts Fund for the Arts - The goals of this fund are to:
      1. Build a world-class, dynamic, vibrant arts and culture sector by:
        1. Celebrating artistic genius and success
        2. Growing the capacity of existing arts organizations
        3. Assisting in the creation of new art organizations
      2. Increase understanding of the central and critical role of the arts in healthy communities
      3. Activate support for the arts

    History of Funding

In 2022, the foundation awarded $7,035,671 in grants with individual awards ranging from $5,000 - $250,000.

    Additional Information

The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia awards more than $7 million in grants to more than 300 nonprofits every year. While many grants are made at the request of our 250+ donor established fund representatives, the Community Foundation also manages a number of competitive grant cycles to support the Northern Virginia region which vary each year. Volunteer committees review and make funding recommendations for our discretionary grants.

The Community Foundation's ability to make grants in the region is thanks to generous donors who have helped establish endowments to forever support areas they care about and who contribute each and every year to advance equity across the region.
