    Summary

    The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines utilizes a strategic grantmaking plan which furthers its Leadership Agenda. Through its grantmaking and community programs, the Community Foundation is committed to allocating substantial resources towards specific strategies and outcomes.


    The Community Foundation has two competitive grant programs made possible by contributions to the Better Together Fund:

    • Leadership Grants: The Leadership Grant program awards grants to organizations serving Greater Des Moines to launch or scale up initiatives positioned to strengthen the community in seven key focus areas drawn from community priorities, details of which can be found here: https://www.desmoinesfoundation.org/filesimages/2023/Grantmaking/Grantmaking%20Priorities_2023.pdf

    • Capacity Building Grants: Capacity Building Grants seek to strengthen an organization's effectiveness. They provide funding for strategic initiatives in areas related to governance or management.  
    • Strategic Alignment Grants: Strategic Alignment Grants provide funding for the exploration and/or implementation of strategic alignment strategies between two or more nonprofit organizations in coming together to enhance systemic support around a community issue/priority, align operations/programming, or deepen partnerships.

    Additional Information

    The Foundation will not consider: 

    • Ongoing annual operating expenses
    • Capital infrastructure projects (bricks and mortar)
    • Sectarian religious programs promoting a particular faith
    • Tactical items such as hardware/equipment, collateral materials, donor management software or website development
    • Projects not serving residents of the Greater Des Moines community

  • Eligibility Details

    Grants are made only to charitable organizations or causes with 501(c)(3) status, or to governmental agencies. Geographically, funding is limited to projects that will significantly improve the Greater Des Moines community.

    Deadline Details

    Leadership Grants:

    • Grant Cycle 1: Letter of Intent due April 5 at Noon; Finalists notified approximately April 23; Full application due May 21 at Noon; Grants approved June 12
    • Grant Cycle 2: Letter of Intent due October 4 at Noon, Finalists notified approximately October 24; Full application due November 15 at Noon; Grants approved December 12

    Capacity Building and Strategic Alignment Grant applications are accepted at any time.

    Award Details

    Typically, Leadership Grants range from $25,000 to $250,000.

    For Capacity Building Grants, organizations may apply for up to $5,000.

    For Strategic Alignment Grants, organizations may apply for up to $25,000.
