As part of the Digital Equity Act, Alaska received direct funding from NTIA to create a State Digital Equity Plan, which is meant to promote the achievement of digital equity, support digital inclusion activities, and build capacity for efforts by Alaska relating to the adoption of broadband by residents of Alaska.
In May 2024 states then submitted their plans for the State Digital Equity Capacity Grant Program, which NTIA has approved on a rolling basis.
Funds must address Covered Populations, which includes:
- Low-income households
- Aging populations
- Incarcerated individuals
- Veterans
- People with disabilities
- People with language barriers
- Racial and ethnic minorities
- Rural inhabitants
Alaska will use funds to:
- Launch statewide digital literacy programs with in-person programming, train-the-trainer, leveraging existing digital literacy resources and curricula, and coordinating with community partners
- Create a device refurbishment, distribution, and maintenance program partnering with private and public agencies and organizations
